2008 AYSO
Referee Appreciation Dinner
Held on February 27, 2009, at Pat and Oscars.
STORY TIME
We had 28 referees from our region join us for food,
prizes and stories from the pitch.
The following stories were prize winners and runner-ups.
All Referees that shared a story received small gifts and
the winners received a 2 pack of AMC Movie tickets.
Most Interesting Experience
1st place – Michael W.
During a U10 Playoff game with the coach next to the AR,
the AR started wiggling his flag . Not seeing any possible
foul on the pitch near the AR or any player down the Referee
waved the AR off. During the next quarter break the Referee
went to ask he AR why he was signaling a foul? The AR stated
that it was not a foul but that the coach had wanted to take
a time out!
Runner ups
Due to a shortage of referees the Referee ended up
working his own daughters game. It was a U10 girls game
early in the season so what could go wrong?? During the game
his daughter was in goal and a shot was made. A defender
attempted to stop the ball deflecting the ball to the goal
keeper. The referee blew the whistle calling a “pass to the
keeper” foul and gave the IFK. His daughter did not let him
live down the bad call for “deliberately passing the ball to
the goal keeper”!!
During a U14 boys game a parent was not happy with any of
the Referees calls. After warning the coach once the parent
was ejected when the loud comments did not stop. After the
game the parents of the team all came by to thank the
referee for the ejection including the coach. The parent was
a perfect supporter cheering for the players for the rest of
the year.
Hardest or Worse call of the year
1st place- Thomas S.
During a tight U12 Boys game Thomas was the AR. Both
sides were playing hard and using an off side trap to keep
the offense on their own side of the field. The defenders
were in attacking positions when a ball was cleared to the
other side of the field. The two attackers that had been on
the mid field line took off after the ball on an excellent
goal scoring opportunity when the whistle is blown for the
offside call that Thomas had signaled. During the drive home
Mark (Thomas’s farther) informed Thomas that he had made a
bad call and to end the argument pulled out the law book to
show Thomas you cannot be offside on your own side!! (Hey
Mark – you should be a referee!!)
Runner ups
Not expecting to referee that day the Referee did not
have all his equipment but took the field anyway. During the
U12 Boys game an attacker made a beautiful switch and then
(about 10 minutes later!) a defender slide in cleats up
taking out the attacker at the feet. Reaching for the red
card…… the referee realized he did not have his cards! He
blew the whistle for the foul and sternly warned the
defender if that ever happens again he will be ejected from
the field! Boy was it that players lucky day!
During a U14 boys game the referee was following play and
the action was good. All of a sudden there is an attack and
the referee is sprinting down the field watching the play
and glances for the AR….. but the AR was missing! As play
slows down in the penalty area the referee looks around for
his AR and sees him…. standing completely still, mid field
line, flag straight up in the air. The referee had missed
the offside signal for at least 3 minutes! (Hey, where was
the help from the fans yelling at the referee this time???)
RAFFLE DRAWING
We held a raffle for prizes giving a ticket for every
game a referee covered. With over 1,000 referee positions
required for the year we had a lot of tickets in the bowl. I
would like to give a special thank up to John Kissell, who
covered the most games for the region at 26 for the season.
If everyone did that many games we would only need 40
referees!
